We recently held a committee meeting to discuss the viability of the Festival for 2021. On balance we felt that sadly, holding a Festival this year was not viable. As well as the ongoing uncertainty, we were also aware that many music lessons and activities will have also suffered over the past year or so making preparations potentially hard for both performers and teachers.
It is a great shame to have to cancel, and as many of you will be aware we also cancelled the 2020 Festival. We do feel though that it’s better to make a decision now, rather than be forced into making a last-minute decision closer to the time.
The future of the Lichfield Festival of Music
At the same meeting, we also discussed the future and viability of the Festival beyond 2021. The Festival has provided a performance platform for musicians of all ages for over 40 years. Much has changed in that time, and we must now consider the relevance and place of the Festival in the 21st-century.
We were keen that the Festival should continue in some form or another, but we are desperately in need of both new volunteers and new ideas to take it forward. Whilst there are much larger festivals around, people have often commented that they appreciate the small and friendly nature of ours. That said, it is still a considerable undertaking each year, and the organisation is currently falling to our very small committee.
If we are to take the Festival forward, both as a committee, and as a musical community in Lichfield, we need your help.
What kind of festival do you want?
At the moment, we offer a range of competitive classes for all age groups. Classes are held on two Saturdays in November with a celebration concert at the end of the second day.
Is this the kind of event people would most value? What might a different kind of Festival look like? Do we still want a Festival which has a competitive element?
Can you help?
The reality is that whatever form the Festival might take in the future, we need more help to organise and run it. Whilst we have a fairly good pool of volunteers willing to help steward on the day, we need people who can take an active role on the committee in running the event.
Depending what form the Festival might take in the future, the time commitment is focussed on May to November each year. We normally hold around 3-4 committee meetings each year in addition to an AGM in May/June.
Whilst we don’t feel able to hold a Festival in 2021, we can use the time to plan for the future, and we’d love you to be part of that journey with us as we look to what we might hold in 2022.
If you have any thoughts on the Festival, ideas for the future, or could offer your time and enthusiasm to help us run it, we’d love to hear from you. Please email us.
